3. Rice

We most definitely agree that white rice isn’t the best option for your overall health, but, as we said before not all carbs are created equal. You should really consider that white rice looked exactly like brown rice before it went through the refining process.

Brown rice is clearly the healthiest option when it comes to inexpensive staple foods across the world. It is rich in proteins, thiamine, calcium, magnesium, fiber, and potassium—and they all are good stuff for our health. The best part? It has a low glycemic rating, meaning that the carbs it offers enter the bloodstream slowly, this way minimizing insulin spikes.

This healthy rice is a great option for people who have diabetes, or are struggling to lose weight too. The 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend replacing refined grains (e.g. white rice) with whole grains (e.g. brown rice).

Take into consideration that the recommended daily allowance of whole grains is a minimum of three ounces of whole grains for women and four ounces for men—the equivalent of consuming 1.5 to 2 cups of brown rice each day. Now, tell us… are you having second thoughts about consuming brown rice?
