When we are talking about metabolism we refer to the biochemical processes that run your body—including those that transform food and beverages into pure energy. It’s quite simple: the slower your metabolism, the fewer calories you might burn.

1. Diet soda

As we age, our natural calorie burner slows rapidly. This is probably why older people tend to gain weight faster than younger people. Artificial sweeteners may be a big issue because they can change your gut bacteria, which could eventually cause your blood sugar to spike and therefore raise your risk for type 2 diabetes and obesity, according to a study published in Nature.

You should always opt for water, because not drinking the recommended amount of water (eight 8-ounce glasses daily) is a major metabolism mistake. “When you feel thirsty, you’re likely already one to two percent dehydrated,” says Amy Gorin, MS, RDN, a New York City-based registered dietitian nutritionist. “Water may help you feel fuller and help you eat less at meals. It might even help temporarily boost pre-meal metabolism.”
