When Should Food Poisoning Send You To The Doctor?

Every year, one in six Americans is struggling with food poisoning regardless of age or gender. This unpleasant condition happens when you eat something contamined with bacteria, viruses, parasites or other chemicals.

We’ve all been there and we all know it’s pretty unpleasant: from nausea to vomiting, pain or diarrhea, food poisoning often makes us take a day off work to rest! Fortunately, most of these symptoms are just your body’s way to clean itself and become healthy again.

However, there are some cases when food poisoning should send you to the emergency room.

You should contact your doctor as soon as possible if you:

  • are older than 60 years of age
  • are an infant or toddler
  • are pregnant
  • have a weakened immune system
  • have a chronic health condition like diabetes or kidney disease

This is recommended mainly because those categories of people have a weaker system and their body may need extra help to recover.

Overall, food poisoning can happen to anyone and it really does happen. With so many temptations around, it’s hard not to stumble upon that doesn’t do your stomach any good. Stay patient, get some rest and if your symptoms are ongoing or make you feel too sick, contact your doctor and everything will be alright!
