Edible Flowers: Do’s And Don’ts

Do:

  • Do your research and only consume flowers that you’re sure are 100% edible. Consult a nutritionist to make sure the flowers are ok to eat, and when in doubt, don’t eat them!
  • In some cases, the edible parts are the bulb. While for others, it’s the petals. Do your research to confirm which parts of the flower are safe to eat and which aren’t.
  • Edible flower varieties are only ok to eat when grown organically and washed thoroughly.
  • Only eat flowers in small quantities, one type of flower at a time. This is a great way to avoid digestive problems and spot any possible allergy reactions.

Don’t:

  • Don’t eat flowers you bought commercially. In most cases, these flowers were treated with toxic pesticides and are not intended for consumption.
  • Avoid consuming flowers grown by roadsides because they may be exposed to vehicle exhaust fumes and other residues.
  • Know what you’re eating! Don’t just consume the flowers served on your dish in a restaurant. Some chefs use flowers as an aesthetic garnish on their plates, and those specific flowers aren’t meant to be eaten. If you’re unsure if the flower can be eaten, just avoid consuming it.
