3. Legumes
Another type of food that acts as a natural laxative is the old-fashioned legume. Legumes such as lentils, beans, peas, and chickpeas encourage bowel movement regularity. And, again, this is possible due to their fiber content.
Approximately 200 grams of boiled lentils pack almost 16 grams of fiber, while about 165 grams of chickpeas contain nearly 13 grams. Consuming legumes on a regular basis will most likely increase the production of butyric acid, a fatty acid that also acts as a natural laxative.
In fact, several studies pointed out that butyric acid could prevent constipation by maximizing the digestive tract movement. On top of that, butyric acid has powerful anti-inflammatory properties that can reduce intestinal inflammation. Therefore, legumes are particularly good for Crohn’s disease patients.
The best part? You can consume them in a variety of ways! From boiled to raw and cooked, legumes are indeed the most versatile foods on earth.
