Endangered Foods

Different foods have decreased in popularity AND quantity throughout history, and a few have even disappeared. For example, records show that 86% of the apple varieties grown in the US are gone. Old Cornish cauliflowers have become extinct, and also the Ansault pear, which experts described had a delicious buttery flavor.

Over time, farmers have introduced new genetic mutations of crops and livestock. For example, the wheat used to make bread today differs from the one used 20 years ago. Every living and non-living organism on our planet is limited, meaning nothing will last forever. Combine that with climate change, and other shifts in the environment, and science tells us that some of the fruits, vegetables, and meat we consume will become extinct, probably within our lifetime.

While it sounds unsettling, it’s essential to be aware of these issues to prepare ourselves for the future and how we treat the environment around us. Imagine a world without some of your favorite foods. Coffee, chocolate, avocadoes, and peanut butter are just a few. So what are some of the endangered foods we eat daily that may not be around much longer? Click “Next” below to see our 12 common foods that are going extinct.
