Sugar-Free Foods
You might want to rethink snatching up that sugar-free gum, soda, or candy. The main ingredients in most sugar-free products are carbs that the body can’t fully absorb. Ingredients like mannitol, sorbitol, xylitol, maltitol, and erythritol can lead to diarrhea, gas, and bloating. Watch out for anything ending with an ‘ol’ on the ingredient list.
Also, many people aren’t aware that a significant cause of gas is sugar-free gum. Many sugar-free products contain sorbitol in them, which can be fermented by gut bacteria, leading to unwanted gas.
Gum seems like an unlikely gas source, but chewing it can make you swallow more air. And many sugar-free gums are also sweetened with sugar alcohols that are harder to digest. Read labels carefully when buying any sugar-free gums, candy, and other snacks, and don’t choose the ones with sorbitol in them.
