17. Sauces
Generally, sauces are added to enhance the flavor either during the cooking process or when consumed. But do you know what ingredient boosts the flavor? Yep, salt, again. One of the saltiest and tastiest sauces is soy sauce. A one-tablespoon serving has as many as 1,024 milligrams of sodium (44 percent of the RDI).
Barbecue sauce is also salty. A two-tablespoon serving provides almost 400 milligrams of sodium. Tomato sauce is also bad, especially canned ones. Just 1/4 cup of tomato sauce contains more than 320 milligrams of sodium or 14 percent of the RDI.
Find low-in-sodium versions of soy and barbecue sauces and make your own tomato sauce at home.
