There are a great number of chemicals that can be absorbed through the skin, which is why the FDA makes sure consumers are safe by restricting cosmetics just as often as it restricts foods or drinks.

You may not be aware of it, but counterfeit makeup is on the rise in the U.S. These products typically originate from China and can be exceedingly dangerous, though the average consumer might not even realize which products are fakes by simply looking at them.

In worst-case scenarios, these can contain mercury compounds, cattle products, and chloroform. The first step in avoiding any counterfeits is to simply buy your cosmetics from credible, reputable sources. Also, if an item’s price is too good to be true, it’s probably a fake!
