Medical Reasons For Fasting
You’re often required to fast before many medical procedures such as cholesterol screenings, blood glucose checks, and major surgeries. Your doctor may even want you to fast before a blood test.
That’s because eating or drinking may interfere with your results, mainly if your body hasn’t wholly digested the food you have eaten. Some tests check the fat level in your blood, so if you are still digesting food, this could result in misleading test results.
The reason to fast before any major surgery involving anesthesia is that when patients who have eaten recently undergo anesthesia, there is the risk of vomiting and inhaling the contents.
