Which Foods Should You or Shouldn’t You Keep Past the Expiration Date?

Berries

For berries, expiration dates are just as useless as the ones on milk. That’s why you have to check them for mold instead. If you see any mold growth, throw them out since they could also be contaminated with bugs you can’t see, caused by high levels of moisture.

Whipped Cream

If you’re going to buy ingredients to make homemade whipped cream, you have to eat it quickly. It’ll not only lose it’s texture if you let it sit for too long, but you could actually get sick if you don’t consume it in time. Leaving it in the fridge for just one day will make it lose its form and flavor.

As for unwhipped heavy cream, you can safely store that in the fridge for 10 days.

Raw Chicken

By now, everyone should know that handling chicken could be dangerous to your health if not handled right. There is no legal requirement for chicken to carry a sell-by date and, if you’ve seen one on the ones you purchased, that’s because the stores chose to add one voluntarily.

Still, it’s recommended that you cook your chicken in no more than two days after purchase if you’ve stored it in the fridge. Can you still cook it after the sell-by date? Yes, if it doesn’t smell strange and it isn’t slimy. Be careful when handling it and wash your hands often since bacteria can transfer easily from the raw meat to other surfaces.
