5. Cholesterol-lowering phytosterols
Phytosterols are so-called ‘cholesterol-lowering’ nutrients that may harm your overall health. They are basically plant-based versions of cholesterol, and although several studies demonstrated that phytosterols could lower blood cholesterol, they also revealed that they also have negative effects on the cardiovascular system.
In fact, recent studies suggest that phytosterols can maximize the risk of developing heart disease. On top of that, it seems that people with a genetic condition named phytosterolaemia, in which the plant sterol levels in the blood are raised, are actually more prone to phytosterols’ harmful effects.

So cholesterol-lowering phytosterols don’t help us as much as you may have thought.
