Expired Food: Eggs

3-4 weeks past expiration date

The dates printed on egg cartons are not actually expiration dates. The American Egg Board explains that these dates show when the eggs were packed or just an indication for stores to know how long they can sell them.

With proper handling, you can extend the shelf-life of this “expired food.” Raw eggs will keep at it’s best quality for about three weeks after their sell by/use by/best by date printed on the carton, as long as you have kept them refrigerated the whole time and aren’t cracked.

An excellent way to check whether an egg has expired put the egg in a glass of water. If it stays on the bottom, the egg is fresh. If it floats, trash it!

  1. I spent 1 year and 1 day in Viet Nam. Because the war was going on most of the time we survived on C-Rations. These were the WW2 style, canned foods. all were marked WW2 1943 production date. They were all we had and weren’t all that bad. exception the Lima beans were awful. most were packed in a lot of grease.

  2. When I was cleaning the fridge, I found a flip yogurt that had fallen down behind the drawer. It was nearly a year past the “best by” date. It was my favorite flavor, so I had check it out! It had separated, so I mixed it well, added the mix-in and tried it. It smelled good and tasted fine, so I ate it. That was about 5 yrs ago and I’m still alive and did not get sick.
So… if you have something that you’re wondering about – check it before you toss it out!

  3. Thank you for this great information! It help us to know how to check our foods and not waste them! God bless you all for your hard work and caring for others well being!
