1. Salmon

Consuming fish three or more times a week could actually lower stroke risk by 6 to 12 percent, according to a Swedish study in the Journal Stroke that involved nearly 400,000 people. Researchers suggest the omega-3 fats that are found in fish like salmon, tuna, and mackerel minimize inflammation in the arteries, helping to enhance blood flow and reduce the chance of blood clots.

As a plus, when you eat more fish, it could mean that your diet isn’t based on red meat and processed meats, which actually have more artery-clogging saturated fats. The American Heart Association recommends at least two 3.5 ounce servings per week. However, this isn’t a strict amount—you can safely consume between 6 and 12 ounces of seafood each week.
