Expired Food: Spices

1-2 months past expiration date

Here we also include salt, white flour, baking soda and powder, and sugar. Since there isn’t moisture in dry ingredients, they’re less sensitive to bacterial growth in general.

Salt especially never goes bad because it can’t support bacterial growth and is often used as a preservative since it’s good at preventing that growth.

You obviously shouldn’t eat any dry ingredients with an unnatural smell or signs of a pest infestation. And while Spices never actually go “off,” they DO lose their potency and flavor over time, so there isn’t much point in using old spices in your cooking.

Generally, whole spices stay fresh for around four years, ground spices for 3-4 years, and dried and leafy herbs for about a year. An easy way to check? Sniff your stock. If you can’t smell them, you won’t be able to taste them.

  1. I spent 1 year and 1 day in Viet Nam. Because the war was going on most of the time we survived on C-Rations. These were the WW2 style, canned foods. all were marked WW2 1943 production date. They were all we had and weren’t all that bad. exception the Lima beans were awful. most were packed in a lot of grease.

  2. When I was cleaning the fridge, I found a flip yogurt that had fallen down behind the drawer. It was nearly a year past the “best by” date. It was my favorite flavor, so I had check it out! It had separated, so I mixed it well, added the mix-in and tried it. It smelled good and tasted fine, so I ate it. That was about 5 yrs ago and I’m still alive and did not get sick.
So… if you have something that you’re wondering about – check it before you toss it out!

  3. Thank you for this great information! It help us to know how to check our foods and not waste them! God bless you all for your hard work and caring for others well being!
