5. Farm-raised salmon
Wild-caught salmon is incredibly healthy (that’s why we mention it in almost all of our articles), but the farmed variety can be quite dangerous for our health. If you’re eating farmed salmon on a regular basis, note that you’re also increasing your risk of developing cancer.
In general, farm-raised salmon contains unsafe levels of toxins. The Environmental Working Group even said that most of them have high levels of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCBs), a type of chemical that can cause cancer and birth defects (that’s why it has been banned in our country since 1976).
Yes, we know that polychlorinated biphenyl was banned, but how can farm-raised salmon still contain it? Well… farmed salmon is fed with small fish and those fish can come from polluted or contaminated waters. So, even if PCB levels found in farmed salmon have dropped over the past few years, it’s best to opt for wild-caught salmon.
