Diabetics know they should limit carbohydrates, fats, and sugar and up their intake of fiber. Meal plans created by the American Diabetes Association suggest that 45 percent of daily calories should come from carbohydrates, with 45 to 60 grams per meal, and most of those from whole grains, fruits, and vegetables.
Additionally, New York nutritionist Laurie Simon suggests limiting any one meal to 10 grams of sugar or less. That’s difficult enough eating at home; sticking to the rules at restaurants can be even harder — but it can be done.
