9. Brown rice syrup
Have you ever heard of brown rice syrup? It is basically a sweetener that’s wrongly associated with the term ‘health.’ Brown rice syrup, a.k.a. rice malt syrup is made by exposing cooked rice to certain enzymes that break down starch into simple sugars.
Although it doesn’t contain any trace of refined fructose, only glucose, brown rice syrup has a big glycemic index; 98 to be more precise. In other words, the glucose found in brown rice syrup can easily cause blood sugar levels to spike.
Plus, brown rice syrup has almost no beneficial and essential nutrients. It has what nutritionists call ’empty’ calories. Another reason to be concerned about consuming this syrup is the possible contamination with arsenic.
