7. Pufferfish
If the foods we’ve already listed in this article are dangerous only when consumed raw but in large amounts, we can’t say the same about pufferfish. You should never eat pufferfish raw! In fact, pufferfish pose a great risk even when it’s cooked.
Jennifer Dennis-Wall, Ph.D., lead scientific writer at Biorasi, a contract research organization, says that this type of fish is known for a toxic compound known by doctors as tetrodotoxin. And in some situations, the cooking process won’t destroy the toxin.
According to the FDA, there’s virtually no certification process for cooking this deadly fish in our country, unlike Japan, where license requirements from the health ministry are needed to confirm that those who prepare pufferfish (or fugu in Japan) know how to remove the poisonous parts of the fish. Our advice, just steer clear of pufferfish!
