9. Bitter almonds
Have you ever heard of bitter almonds? If yes, you probably know that they need to be processed in order to be edible. California’s almonds is actually the largest annual managed pollination event in the entire world, so if you happen to be a Californian native or just visiting the Golden State, maybe avoid picking almonds straight from the tree.
It is not safe to eat them raw! In fact, the raw form of bitter almond varieties is illegal in our country. Bitter almonds contain hydrocyanic acid called prussic acid, which can lead to breathing difficulties, and even death.
