Fruit compote or fruit canned in syrup

We have to admit that fruit compote is one of the most delicious foods! But it seems that this type of food is not as healthy as you probably think, especially the processed variety. Why? Well, it has a large quantity of sugar in its composition and this is why it is so delicious.

“When a fruit is canned in ‘light syrup’ or ‘heavy syrup,’ that means that sugar has been added to the fruit,” says Amy Gorin, M.S., R.D.N., owner of Amy Gorin Nutrition in the New York City area. “Fruit is plenty sweet on its own, so you don’t need any added sugar with it.”

However, if you like to eat fruit canned you can make it at home with natural ingredients and you can opt for natural sweeteners, such as honey. Or you can find another variant in the trade that does not have these ingredients, but you have to be careful about the label ingredients.

“Just make sure to read the ingredient label to make sure a product is canned either in 100% juice or water,” says Gorin. “Neither of these contain added sugars.”

Shortening products

People who love to cook should know that cooking with vegetable shortening can be really bad for your health, even though your cookies look good. According to nutrition experts, vegetable shortening is made from hydrogenated oils, also known as artificial fats, and as a result of these ‘genetic changes,’ the oils become solid at normal temperatures.

“Consumption of hydrogenated oils on a regular basis can increase LDL ‘bad’ cholesterol and lower HDL ‘good’ cholesterol, and can, therefore, increase your risk of heart disease,” says Andrews.
