Expired Food: Cereal
1-3 weeks past expiration date
As a rule, if you have a box of cereal in your cabinet with a toy in it, it’s probably from the 90s, and you should definitely throw it out!
But, while most of us don’t keep cereal around for that long, it’s not uncommon to be scouring around the pantry and come across a box of cereal that’s passed its “sell by” or “best by” date.
The same as many canned goods, some cereals have long shelf lives, but it’s not always clear how long is too long. So, is that cereal you found still safe to eat?
Well, that depends. Like pasta, these dry processed foods don’t contain that much moisture, which contributes to their stability. The same goes for crackers, dried fruit, and chips.

Extremely helpful and knowledgeable. Thank You!
Thank you. Now I know.
very annoying to have to click on each page. can’t you make just one long list?
I spent 1 year and 1 day in Viet Nam. Because the war was going on most of the time we survived on C-Rations. These were the WW2 style, canned foods. all were marked WW2 1943 production date. They were all we had and weren’t all that bad. exception the Lima beans were awful. most were packed in a lot of grease.
When I was cleaning the fridge, I found a flip yogurt that had fallen down behind the drawer. It was nearly a year past the “best by” date. It was my favorite flavor, so I had check it out! It had separated, so I mixed it well, added the mix-in and tried it. It smelled good and tasted fine, so I ate it. That was about 5 yrs ago and I’m still alive and did not get sick.
So… if you have something that you’re wondering about – check it before you toss it out!
Thank you for this great information! It help us to know how to check our foods and not waste them! God bless you all for your hard work and caring for others well being!
