Oil of Sassafras

For a long time, oil of sassafras was commonly used in America. It was a well-known and beloved ingredient used to flavor soft drinks, such as root beer. But research done in labs exposed one disheartening truth. The main ingredient used in the oil, safrole, was found to be extremely harmful. That’s when, in 1960, the FDA banned it.

But let’s say you disagree with this decision and want to try it out for yourself. Well, then you might also get the DEA on your back. That’s because safrole is a key ingredient in illegal designer drugs such as ecstasy and MDMA. Classified as a List I Chemical, you’ll have much more than the FDA to worry about if this ingredient is ever found on you.
