Ackee
Many Americans have not even heard about ackees, native to tropical West Africa. Known also as the national fruit of Jamaica, this fruit is consumed in other parts of the world. Thanks to the FDA’s ban, many of us here in the U.S. have never even had the chance to taste them.
They’re actually harmless and delicious, but only when harvested at the right time. Unripe fruits could lead to death as they contain potentially fatal doses of hypoglycin.
If you feel brave enough to try them then you might have to go on vacation to the Caribbean where they are used in a variety of national cuisines.
