It’s probably no surprise that carbonated beverages are not great for your teeth. For example, a 12-ounce can of soda has a whopping 39 grams of sugar—if you search on Google, that’s almost ten teaspoons! And, unfortunately, that’s not the only issue. “It’s very acidic,” says Tricia Quartey, DDS, a dentist in Brooklyn, New York. “And acid can break down the enamel.”

So, if you’re sipping soda all day long, you are practically coating your teeth in acid. Also, a recent study even found that drinking large quantities of carbonated soda could be as damaging to your teeth as using methamphetamine and crack cocaine.
