Just like soda, the bottled juice you buy from supermarkets is acidic and often contains added sugars, sometimes as much as ten teaspoons per serving (pro tip: check the reading labels to find out hidden names for sugar such as fructose and glucose). That sugar found in your favorite drink feeds bacteria in your mouth, leading to tooth decay. However, one dentist suggests a surprising alternative: apple juice.

“There’s usually no added sugars in apple juice,” says Tyrone Rodriguez, DDS, director of pediatric dentistry at Yale–New Haven Hospital. Dr. Rodriguez also suggests watering down apple juice to decrease the natural sugar further or making other juices yourself at home.
