Food Poisoning And Bon Vivant Soup
In July 1971, a couple in Westchester County, New York, ate a meal of Bon Vivant brand vichyssoise soup. This soup was often served cold, and the couple ate the soup right out of the can. Tasting terrible, they did not finish it. Unfortunately, it was already too late.
The soup had been contaminated with botulism. The husband was dead within 24hrs, and the wife was poisoned and paralyzed by the botulism toxin. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) put out a public warning and recalled all Bon Vivant vichyssoise soup cans.
Five more cans were found to contain the botulinum toxin. The FDA shut down the Bon Vivant plant and recalled all of its products. The incident destroyed consumer confidence in Bon Vivant, and it soon went into bankruptcy.
