What Happens to Your Body When Overeating During Holidays

Okay, let’s face it: one of the main reasons why we’re waiting for winter is to enjoy every single kind of tasty food out there. Whether it’s Thanksgiving, Christmas or New Year’s Eve, we’re all looking forward to that unhealthy feast with our loved ones.

However, it’s all fun and games until you get sick – and we’ve all been there. But what really happens to your body when you eat more than you should? Let’s find out together.

Blood sugar & insuline levels spike

Those delicious desserts may seem tasty at first, but they do serious damage to your body. Actually, when you overeat basically anything, your blood sugar rises, thus forcing your heart to work more than usual. That’s why you’re feeling so tired after a big meal. Also, overeating constantly puts you at great risk for diabetes!

Unfortunately, blood sugar levels are also strongly linked to insulin production. In other words, high blood sugar levels make your body develop a resistance to insulin, which, as you’ve probably guessed, also leads to diabetes.

What to do next?

Eating big meals doesn’t seem like such a great idea now, right? Do not despair! You can still eat your favourite foods as long as you keep in mind one word: moderation. Here are a few tips and tricks to stay healthy during this ‘difficult’ time full of temptations:

  • Eat small meals, but do it often – this way you can enjoy any kind of food you want;
  • Drink plenty of water to help your body digest foods easier and regulate your blood sugar levels;
  • Eat as slowly as you can; this allows your body to realize when it’s had enough food and send you the signal.
