Tomatoes: The leaves and stems of tomatoes have a poison called alkali that can cause your stomach to be agitated. You would need to consume a huge amount of quantities for it to be fatal, so don’t worry! And while they’re not exactly high-risk, you might want to avoid eating tomato leaves.
Fruit Seeds:Â Cherry pits, for example, have a certain type of hydrogen cyanide called prussic acid. So you should never eat a cup of ground pits… or peach and apricot pits, for that matter.
Cashews:Â The “raw” cashews you find in the supermarket are not actually raw because they’ve been steamed to remove the urushiol, a chemical that’s also found in poison ivy. High levels of urushiol can prove to be fatal. So people who are allergic to poison ivy are likely to have a fatal allergic reaction to eating actual raw cashews as well.
Rhubarb: Rhubarb leaves include oxalic acid, which can cause kidney stones. It might take 11 pounds of leaves for it to be considered a poisonous food, but considerably less to make you seriously ill.
Tuna: We’ve all heard about the mercury that the fish can absorb. Once in your body, the mercury will either pass through your kidneys or travel to your brain and supposedly drive you insane. The FDA recommends children and pregnant women not consume tuna at all. While it’s unlikely that eating a huge amount of tuna in one sitting will kill you, it’s a good idea to monitor your weekly intake of this poisonous food.
