“Popcorn itself is actually considered a whole grain, but you’ll want to avoid the microwave kind. It’s a processed food that is loaded with fat and sodium,” Lewis says. Even worse, the bag lining contains diacetyl, a chemical that gives popcorn its buttery flavor.
Unfortunately, sometimes tasty doesn’t mean healthy and this chemical can be toxic when heated. As a matter of fact, some studies suggest that diacetyl is linked to lung disease.
What to eat instead: Make your own popcorn on the stove top or simply use an air-popper, Lewis advises. You can also get really creative with your toppings. “Give nutritional yeast a try—it tastes like cheese without all the fat,” she says.
