7. Mashed potatoes

Mashed potatoes are definitely a beloved comfort food—and they are pretty healthy when boiled and smashed at home. “Mashed potatoes at a buffet often come from a box or prepackaged mix, have lots of sodium, lack the nutritious potato skins, and have lots of added fats,”  says Amanda Kostro Miller, RD, who serves on the advisory board for Family Living Today.

If you want to eat healthier, opt for baked potatoes (if they are sweet, even better!). “Roasted or baked potatoes usually have the nutritious skin and you can control what condiments you add,” she says.

  1. This is one of the most ridiculous questions ever. Independence Day is July 4th. Period. Juneteenth is a black holiday only; it has no business even being in the conversation.

I don’t have dessert at home so if I go to a buffet, I will try about three or four. I think it doesn’t hurt if it is once in a while.

  3. Guess we should put all the buffets out of business by staying home and make all our own food by your standards. You go out to eat as a “treat” to have something you would NOT make or fix at home, or at last have it prepared in a way that is different to what you usually eat. It is a once in a while “treat” to eat out, so you do not have to cook. On those rare times to eat something that is ‘not on the skinny diet’ should be allowed I would think.

  4. Wow, I never knew all these different foods are not good at a buffet, and I can say I have done every one of these no,nos. What an eye opener for me! You are right about going to a buffet when you are low on money. I;ve done that several times with friends. I can say I have never been sick eating from a buffet. I always watch when they bring out fresh dishes. Is that still not safe? I will have to pass this on to my friends. I’m a big sushi eater, but going to a sushi resturant is very expensive where I live. But what I do is go to my grocery store that has people making it and I take ones they have just made.
