Haggis
Though people in Scotland swear by their staple dish, the haggis, those of us who live in the U.S. will never have the chance to try out this savory pudding on American soil. That’s because it’s made out of a combination of sheep organs, including liver, heart, and lungs.
These are also mixed in with stock, onions, spices, and oats. But the reason why the FDA has banned haggis in the U.S. since 1971 lies in the dangerous microbes found in sheep organs, primarily the lungs.
Although negotiations between the UK and US government about lifting the ban have been going on recently, as yet nothing has happened. So if you ever want to try out this meal wrapped in a sheep’s stomach, your best bet is to fly to Scotland and try it out like a true Scottish person would.
