Jerky and Other Dried Meats
The portability of jerky and other dried meats makes them a convenient protein source, but salt is used heavily to preserve them and boost flavor. For example, a 1-ounce (28-gram) serving of beef jerky packs 620 mg of sodium, or 27% of the RDI. If you’re a jerky fan, look for meat from grass-fed or organically-raised animals, as they tend to have simpler ingredient lists and less sodium. But be sure to check the label.
