5. Deep-fried foods
Deep-fried food definitely has a good taste and a nice, crunchy texture, but isn’t exactly good for you. A number of malignancies, including breast, pancreatic, and esophageal cancer, have been linked to a diet high in deep-fried foods.
When you cook food in oil at high temperatures, it can break down carcinogenic compounds. The more you cook your food in heated oil, the more toxicity it’ll have. You can avoid it by choosing slow cooking or pressure cooking as much as possible, as they’re safer.
Or, better still, stay away from deep-fried meals entirely. Deep-fried food is linked to cancer, but if you still want the crunchiness of it, you can cook your meals in an air fryer or pop them in the oven.
6. Refined carbohydrates
High glycemic index (GI) foods, such as pasta, bagels, and other “white” carbs cause a spike in blood sugar levels more quickly, compared to other things you typically eat. Recent research has found that high GI diets raise the risk of getting lung cancer by 49%.
However, there’s hope for all those pasta lovers out there (us included)! The glycemic load of a meal might be lowered by adding healthy fats (like olive oil) and protein with pasta (it can be fish or meat). Besides the better taste, it will also keep you full for longer, so you won’t hear your stomach growling after a couple of hours!
Attention, barbecue lovers: researchers warn that high consumption of meat, especially well-cooked meat, has been associated with a higher risk of malignancies, including cancer. One of their explanations is that the carcinogenic PAHs that the meat produces while it’s being grilled is the root of the issue.
As a general rule, those delicious char marks on a flame-broiled burger or steak indicate the presence of chemicals that might not be as healthy as they taste.
Besides that, researchers also claim that even charred toast contains some of these chemicals, but in considerably lower concentrations. As a result, you should probably look at alternatives to grilling or broiling your meat at very high temperatures, or you can simply consume it in moderation.
8. Hot beverages
Given that both coffee and tea have their own amazing health benefits, this subject has generated a lot of discussions. Recently, coffee was taken off the list of possible carcinogens by the World Health Organization.
However, there’s growing evidence that drinking beverages at temperatures of 149°F or higher might increase the risk of fatal esophageal cancer.
According to the studies, high temperatures might harm the tissue and make it more prone to the formation of malignant tumors, including cancer.
Many pre-made drinks are served between 140 and 160 degrees Fahrenheit, so it’s best to allow your drink to cool down a bit before consuming it.
