Shellfish
If you’re skittish around food then you should stay as far away from shellfish as possible. They’re as deadly as they are delicious. Shrimp, lobster, crab, mussels, clams, scallops, and oysters could lead to deadly anaphylaxis- in fact, out of all the food groups you’re more likely to suffer an attack due to shellfish compared to any other known allergens.
Furthermore, raw shellfish are the most common causes of foodborne illnesses. The Vibrio bacteria is commonly found in raw oysters, for example. It can cause bloodstream infections, skin blistering, gastrointestinal problems, and even death.
We won’t tell you to stop enjoying shellfish, but we do want to remind you to cook everything properly. Don’t rely on alcohol, lemon juice, or hot sauce to kill bacteria as this is a commonly spread myth.
