Reason no. 4: Some probiotic strains maintain your heart health
Not all probiotic strains are created equal, some are better than others. Lactic acid-producing bacteria can reduce LDL (“bad”) cholesterol by breaking down bile (a fluid made of cholesterol), in the gut.
So, when it’s broken down, probiotic foods or supplements can avoid reabsorbing it in the gut, where it can easily get in the blood as cholesterol.
A study found that consuming probiotic yogurt daily can reduce total cholesterol by 4 percent and “bad” cholesterol by 5 percent in about 8 weeks. Eating probiotics can also lower your high blood pressure, but more evidence is needed to understand the connection between the two.
