Expired Food: Nuts
weeks to months after expiration date
Though most nuts are relatively safe because they lack an abundance of moisture, these satiating foods are typically high in fat, meaning they might need a bit of extra inspection if they’ve been sitting around for a while.
Don’t eat dry processed foods with a grassy or paint-like odor and a dark or oily appearance.
Nuts have “best by” dates because the distributors are legally bound to put one on the package. This is like best before dates on frozen products or cans: those products never expire, so the distributors place random “best before” dates to please lawmakers.
So how do you know if a nut is good? You shell it and eat it. Is it good? Great! Does it taste rancid? Then you’re SOL because while they won’t make you sick, they taste disgusting.

Extremely helpful and knowledgeable. Thank You!
Thank you. Now I know.
very annoying to have to click on each page. can’t you make just one long list?
I spent 1 year and 1 day in Viet Nam. Because the war was going on most of the time we survived on C-Rations. These were the WW2 style, canned foods. all were marked WW2 1943 production date. They were all we had and weren’t all that bad. exception the Lima beans were awful. most were packed in a lot of grease.
When I was cleaning the fridge, I found a flip yogurt that had fallen down behind the drawer. It was nearly a year past the “best by” date. It was my favorite flavor, so I had check it out! It had separated, so I mixed it well, added the mix-in and tried it. It smelled good and tasted fine, so I ate it. That was about 5 yrs ago and I’m still alive and did not get sick.
So… if you have something that you’re wondering about – check it before you toss it out!
